At times our Recovery Team at Enigma Telematics get some cases that are out of the ordinary, and this recovery was one such case. A Doosan 741 2x Tool Compressor was booked out on hire in mid-June however, when the hire period ended the compressor was not returned. Our customer traced the machine and found that the compressor had made a trip across to Ireland and was working out of a farm area in County Leitrim, but was unsure how it got there and why. Our Recovery Team had a bit of a mystery on their hands. Fortunately, due to our team’s hard work and our reliable devices – we were able to not only track the journey of the missing machine but also locate it and coordinate with local authorities to ensure a safe recovery.
In early August, we were informed by a customer of the theft. Information from the customer indicated that the compressor had been stolen two months earlier but was not noticed or reported by the contractor until the hire period expired.
Our initial investigation showed that the Doosan machine had moved from the location where it was hired to in mid-June, to an industrial area near Leavesden, Hertfordshire. It was at this location that the compressor was run until the battery was flat, in a possible attempt to find or incapacitate any tracking devices installed. However, it takes a lot more to disable one of our trackers and thanks to our covert install the device as not discovered by the thieves, so our tracker switched to a low power mode for over a month waiting for the power to be restored to the compressor.
On the 12th of July, the compressor received the power boost that our tracker needed to restore its connection and contact Skyline. The tracker relayed its position and showed that the asset had been moved 25 miles to a farm near Luton. Following on from the reconnection, we tracked the unit as it travelled from the farm to a service station near Watford Gap to finally coming to a rest at Holyhead Ferry Port on the 14th of July. From Holyhead the thieves took the compressor across the Irish Sea to Dublin Docks, and then on to a rural area just outside of Crumlin, County Cavan. Early in August, a few days after the theft was reported, the tracker picked up a new journey moving it to another rural site in County Leitrim.
As the compressor had moved out of the UK and outside of national police jurisdiction, we contacted the Metropolitan Police’s specialist plant unit, PANIU, to assist with the theft. They passed on the details and the location of the stolen machine to INTERPOL to recover the compressor. Within a week of the initial report the machine had been recovered by INTERPOL.
Telematics implementation has proved to help to optimise fleet performance across the board.
The online retail industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world and analysts estimate that by 2021 total global online sales will amount to $4.48 trillion – that’s almost twice the UK’s GDP.
This growth is supported by fast evolving technology and a strong parcel delivery industry. As an increasing number of shoppers prefer purchasing online to brick and mortar stores, and at the same time expect to receive their items in the shortest time possible, retailers need to adapt quickly, become increasingly efficient and keep costs down.
If retailers are to survive in such a highly competitive arena, they need to cater to digitally connected consumers who are always looking for lower prices, greater convenience and a seamless experience when buying, receiving and returning products 24/7.
This puts substantial pressure on delivery companies that need to reduce costs and reduce the impact of fleet management on the environment but also significantly increase their speed and efficiency.
Thankfully technology comes to the rescue and delivery, fulfilment and logistics companies servicing the ecommerce sector can now use smart telematics tools that enable them to access a wealth of data in real-time regarding every vehicle in their fleet to improve their performance, efficiency and lifetime value.
